New media has transformed the way
people communicate and interact from the rise of social networks. It has made
people become closer than ever before, as well as bringing many opportunities
for people all over the world. However, the downfall of the technological
advancement in social networks is the loss of people’s privacy. People’s
information is no longer private once it is online. More and more reports of
data breaches demonstrate how vulnerable third party’s data center is. Due to
various security reasons, hackers can still steal our encrypted information
from the service providers that people use. In addition, people are more and
more willingly to give up their personal information due to many services that
they want to use. Therefore, the rise of new media has created enormous privacy
concerns.
Many students have complained about it being difficult to make friends due to the lack of social activities at Baruch. To resolve this issue, a social networking platform/application designed for Baruch students should solve the issue. It is a platform where students are automatically put into a group when they are enrolled in the same class. On top of the basic communication chats, there could be more functions such as a public announcement page for all campus activities, campus news, public safety information, and emergency announcements. Since Baruch is a commuter school, all that would change the dynamic of Baruch’s social life. Therefore, it would promote students to exchange ideas and share information willingly.
