Twitter
is a social networking and communication website that allows users to engage in
quick information and resource sharing. Each message on Twitter is called a
tweet, and discussion on Twitter is limited to 280 characters per tweet.
Therefore, users need to be mindful of the content of their message. Twitter is
also an online service that allows users to access and participate in
discussions at anytime and anywhere. However, discussions through twitter has
its downfalls, such as how time consuming it is to think of a tweet that only
contains 280 characters.
In
contrast, Blackboard is a platform that is primarily used in an education
setting. It allows teachers and students to engage in class discussions and
resource sharing. Discussion on Blackboard is more private and only selected
people in a group can view and participate. In addition, Blackboard does not
have a limit on how many words you can use per message. Therefore, Blackboard
is a great platform for closed discussions between teachers and students.
In-class
discussion is a face to face interaction that requires participants to be
physically present at the same time. Twitter and Blackboard has advantage over
traditional in-class discussions, as they are both online platforms that allows
users to participate in a discussion anywhere at any time. For in-class
discussions, participants must wait for one person to finish to proceed and
comment on the subject matter. It also requires the speaker to speak loudly so
everyone can hear the speaker. Thus, in-class discussions would be limited for
a large number of participants.
