Social networking technologies have
a tremendous impact to our society. It transforms the way people interact and
how people conduct their businesses. People also connect more closely through
social media. Social media websites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and
Linkedin, allows people to create online profiles to connect with millions of
people. Users can share their stories, opinions, adventures and ideas with
everyone. It fosters the growth of community, connectivity, education and awareness.
Social networking also has many applications to the business world. In the
article, “Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting” by Frank
Langfitt, the author mentions that “With Linkedin, he can find people faster
using a vastly increased network of contacts.” Social networking websites
allows businesses to find the right talent for their company. Therefore, it
benefits both the employers and employees. In addition, there are many other
ways that social media enables businesses to utilize this technology to help
them succeed. Businesses can use social networking sites to conduct sales,
marketing research, and advertising.
Although social networking has many
positive impacts to our society, it also has downfalls. The online world has
both useful and misleading information. The dark side of social networking is
the fact that we do not see people’s true intentions or their real identities.
Misleading online information can also be problematic. In the article, “NBC2
Investigators: Multi-million dollar scam being used on Facebook” by Rachel
Polansky, the author cites that “Criminals like to go where there is an
expectation of trust, people assume it's their neighbors who they're buying
from or selling to.” Anonymity and the lack of accountability are the dark
sides of social networking. People can easily create fake profiles to pretend
to be someone else. It is very difficult to figure out whether someone is
really who they claim to be. Therefore, social networking can be risky, since
information can be used in the wrong ways.
I think social networking technologies
would merge with virtual reality (VR) in the future to fully transform the
social networking we know it today. The merge of social networking and virtual
reality would take our online experiences from a 2-dimensional to
3-dimensional. Instead of seeing text, VR would allow us to see the person in a
virtual world. Therefore, the future for social networking is very exciting as
many other technologies would transform the internet of today. Social networking
would still be a huge part of our life.
